Episode 3- "Sonar Crappie!" is airing now on Pursuit Channel and YouTube!

Jordan Lake has become a destination for crappie fishermen from far and wide! It's early spring and this 14,0000 acre impoundment can yield some big slabs if you understand their movements from deep water to shallower brush piles. And it doesn't hurt to have forward facing sonar to locate and target them.

There's a lot of controversy surrounding these electronic wonders and fishing organizations and tournaments are having to make decisions on whether they support or reject this technology in competitions. I'll leave that up to them. Navigating the pros and cons of this technology is more than I care to involve myself in. For now, "Live Scoping" is legal to use for recreational fishing, and of course, as a TV host, my job is to document me catching fish so after my good buddy Steve Loper introduced me to Kyle Farwell of Farwell Fishing Guide Service, I had to book a trip with him and get a 101 lesson on how to use forward facing sonar for catching big crappie.

We met up with Kyle at the Ferrington Boat Ramp and we spent the day scanning everything from open water to brush piles to creek channels. It was fun to throw our small jigs out and watch them fall on the screen down to fish and see their reaction or non-reaction to the bait as we would bring it right by their face. That's what I immediately found about this technology. It's frustrating to know that the fish are there and you are presenting your bait to them but they refuse to bite. I suppose if I didn't have the technology and was just throwing out and not getting bit I'd be ok with the situation but because I do know that they're there and I'm making all manner of adjustments in my retrieve speed and fall rate it was just plain old frustrating. Still, it was really cool to watch your bait glide by the fish and see it turn toward the bait and the follow it for a few feet then smash it. It's honestly like a video game. And although I'm not a fan of video games, this is one I could come to like!

If you have an interest in catching fish and seeing this technology first hand, I'd give Kyle a call. He's patient and truly has a teacher's heart and will bend over backwards to help you catch fish!  Farwell Fishing Guide Service 603-667-7571
