This week we're meeting back up with Old friend Skip Woody! Skip is the self proclaimed leader of the NC Crow Patrol and I would second that motion. He's hunted them for 40 years plus and even though I didn't know him 40 years ago I can't imagine he was any more zealous about hunting crows than he is today.
We are hunting in Orange County on a farm that Skip has been surveilling for several weeks. He's seen the crows hanging out in the cut corn and bean fields in large numbers from late morning on up into the afternoon. Knowing the general direction and distance of the roost indicated that the birds would be within hearing range of our calls at daybreak and as soon as we turned on the calls the crows were diving in on us almost immediately!

Throughout the morning, crows came in from singles to flocks of 10 or more ! Some curious and quiet, others loud and aggressive. I missed a lot but managed to take a few but Skip was his usual smooth and deadly self, swinging his Browning Maxus 12 gauge on birds and folding them time after time.
Crows might not ever become as popular as ducks and doves but I don't mind. We enjoy hunting one of the smartest birds on the spectrum and especially when they're not educated by other hunters!
