BREAM! Now's The Time!

The simple joys of bream fishing are ones that I’ve relished since childhood and as far as opportunities go for this upcoming month, the state of the bluegill is strong!
From irrigation ponds to the backwaters of our largest lakes and rivers, bluegills, shell crackers, pumpkinseeds, warmouths, and redbreasts are plentiful and waiting for you to pitch a cricket, worm, beetle spin, or jig to them. Just talking about this makes me want to leave my desk and head to my favorite pond on the farm!

I love these scrappy fighters who pound for pound may be the hardest fighting fish in our waters across the state. After you put a mess of fish in your live well, head to the bank and bring out a cooking apparatus like the Carolina Cooker Creekbank Kit, with some seafood breader, cooking oil, a loaf of bread and some cold Pepsis. This recipe is a surefire way to overcome stress renew the soul and feed the belly. I honestly don’t see how you could manufacture a better day!

Although these fish spawn multiple times in the spring, many old timers say the time to be fishing for “bream” is on the first full moon of May. A great rule of thumb but I wouldn’t rule out being on the water during the spring as much as possible. These fish are ready to bite and the early morning and late afternoons and there’s nothing like seeing that cork dunk hard under water and hear the drag on a Zebco 33 strain under the weight of a big Carolina Bluegill!
No specialized gear or guides needed. Just do a little homework online to find a body of water that offers access. Make sure you have your bait and tackle and head to the water. You might find an epic fishing adventure awaits you and whoever you choose to share it with!
